The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Heidelberg University invites applications for a
Full Professorship (W3) for
“Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning” (f/m/d)
to be filled from the winter semester 2023/2024 or later.
Candidates are expected to actively research theoretical problems of machine learning and to have achieved internationally recognised contributions to establishing corresponding mathematical foundations.
The well-endowed professorship will strengthen the research initiative “complex systems and data analysis” at the novel Mathematical Institute, to be established in spring 2023. It is expected to shape fundamental research of machine learning in the cluster of excellence STRUCTURES and to support the development of innovative methods of machine learning at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR). The position is part of the strategy of the Heidelberg University to form a center for machine learning. We expect an active participation in these initiatives as well as in forthcoming research projects of the faculty.
Participation in academic self-governance and teaching, including basic mathematics courses and the projected master’s course “Mathematics of Machine Learning and Data Science”, is required.
Our comprehensive university offers a vibrant scientific environment, with outstanding students and continuous stimulation of basic problems of machine learning through excellent research in the natural and life sciences.
Evidence of methodological expertise includes a strong record of publications and publication venues.
Prerequisites for an application are a university degree, a qualified Doctorate, successful teaching experience and (in accordance with Article 47, Paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg) a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship, or equivalent qualifications.
